A Plus-Size Woman Won Miss Alabama and Sparked a Controversial Online Discussion.

When Sara Milliken placed first in the National American Miss pageant, she accomplished a significant milestone that made her and her supporters proud. Her joy was soon eclipsed, though, by a flurry of online abuse directed at her appearance.

After winning the Miss Alabama pageant, Milliken was subjected to disparaging comments from internet trolls who called her an ‘unhealthy embarrassment.’

Milliken is unflinching in her pursuit of body acceptance and positivity in spite of the criticism.

According to Milliken, ‘even text typed on a screen can leave a lasting impression on people.’ ‘That can lead people to do some very dark things to themselves, even though I’m not at that point.’

Among the hurtful statements were ones that questioned her appropriateness for a beauty competition and made disparaging comparisons to the mascots of fast food chains.

Despite the criticism, Milliken’s admirers have come together in support of her, complimenting her beauty and character.

A admirer said, ‘Anyone with any values and/or humanity can see that from miles away—you are so beautiful on the inside and out.’ Others also complimented her on her accomplishments and beneficial influence.

Resolved to not allow the harsh criticism stop her, Milliken is spending Thanksgiving weekend getting ready for the national finals in Florida.

She said, ‘To be honest, it got to me for about five minutes.’ Even on the internet, their remarks have the power to hurt.

This kind of put me in a position to promote optimism, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.

After three tries, Milliken became victorious in this competition that seeks to promote a ‘positive self-image by enhancing natural beauty within.’

Over Memorial Day Weekend, she took part in a variety of interviews, volunteer projects, and presentations.

She received great marks for personality, confidence, and communication. ‘Braces, glasses, skin problems, varying heights, weights, and appearances,

are all a part of creating the special and unique individual that you are and that we want to celebrate,’ the contest organizers write, emphasizing the importance of appreciating diverse appearances.

After receiving a surprising amount of support following her victory, Milliken went on to amass thousands of new social media followers in a matter of hours.
