Elvis Gives The Performance Of A Lifetime Singing ‘Unchained Melody’

“Unchained Melody” has been covered hundreds of times.  Chances are you’ve already heard one version or another. Susan Boyle once delivered a startling rendition that brought everyone to tears. Of course, there’s also the original Righteous Brothers original.

But nobody does it like Elvis. In this recently restored footage, The King sings this traditional favorite with such intensity and passion that lots of folks believe it to be the best show of his life.

Elvis PreselyIt had been over a year since Elvis last released a studio album, and manager Colonel Tom Parker was determined to get more product into the stores. Despite Elvis’ horrid shape, Parker arranged for a camera crew to film the show for a planned TV special and live album.

As he sits behind the piano, Elvis performs an intensely beautiful version of “Unchained Melody” to a crowd in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1977.

He was visibly ill and was occasionally wheezing, but everything changed as soon as he took a seat at the piano. He launched into a cover of “Unchained Melody,” and sadly, it continues to be considered one of the best renditions of the song of all time.

Sadly, this unforgettable concert was his last. Despite his afflictions, The King lives up to his name in this intense performance. The compelling melody combined with Presley’s intense passion makes for an unforgettable experience.

Although pop culture changes over time, The King’s music continues to live on forever. That being said, while there are many beautiful renditions of ‘Unchained Melody’ out there, but Elvis’ final performance has a special place in history and our hearts.
