Harry Potter’ and ‘Downton Abbey’ star dies at 89

Maggie Smith, the renowned British actress, has passed away at 89. Best known for her Oscar-winning role in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” and her iconic performances as Professor McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” series and the Dowager Countess in “Downton Abbey,” Smith leaves behind a legacy spanning six decades.

Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, confirmed she died in a London hospital on Friday. Smith was widely regarded as one of the greatest British actresses of her generation, winning numerous awards, including two Oscars, multiple BAFTAs, Emmys, and a Tony. Known for her sharp wit and commanding presence, she continued acting into her 80s, with roles in “Downton Abbey: A New Era” and “The Miracle Club.” Despite her public success, Smith remained intensely private, focusing on her craft until the end.
