The Golden Girls, the iconic show that aired from 1985 to 1992, remains a beloved classic over 30 years later. Newsner recently interviewed Stan Zimmerman, a Season 1 writer, who shared some behind-the-scenes stories, especially about Estelle Getty, who played Sophia Petrillo.
Zimmerman fondly recalled Getty’s warmth and motherly nature, noting how she supported him and his writing partner when they were advised to keep their identities private in 1985. Behind her sharp on-screen persona, Getty struggled with early-onset dementia, a challenge that required line cues and supportive measures from the cast and crew. Zimmerman admired her dedication, as she consistently delivered her lines with comedic precision.
He also touched on Betty White’s behavior during filming, noting that while she made jokes when Getty forgot lines, he later wondered if it was to divert the audience’s attention. Zimmerman highlighted the strong work ethic and camaraderie of the cast, who uniquely credited the writers in interviews.
Zimmerman, who detailed his experiences in *The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore*, is now touring with his play *Right Before I Go*, inspired by a personal loss.
