He went to the Pasadena Playhouse and the Stella Adler Academy in Los Angeles.

Early in his work, he had trouble because he only had small parts in plays and on TV. To make money during this time, Nolte did a lot of different odd jobs, including acting as a model, which led to bigger opportunities later on.
