Supreme Court Issues Controversial Ruling In Immigration Case

The Supreme Court issued a narrow 5-4 ruling Tuesday, with Justices Neil Gorsuch and Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the Court’s liberals in an immigration case. The decision in Monsalvo Velazquez v. Bondi held that if the 60-day “voluntary departure” deadline for immigrants falls on a weekend or holiday, it must extend to the next business day—overturning both the 10th Circuit and the Board of Immigration Appeals.

The ruling, seen as a potential signal for upcoming immigration battles, comes ahead of a May 15 case challenging former President Donald Trump’s move to end birthright citizenship. Conservatives Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett dissented, warning the Court overstepped. Meanwhile, Trump’s reinstated border policies have already slowed migrant flows, with many turning back after Biden-era changes were reversed.
