One quiet evening, my daughter Lili shouted that our cat Marsa had “something in her mouth again.” To my shock, Marsa walked in carrying a newborn puppy, gently placing it in her basket where four others already lay. She groomed them and curled around them like their real mother. We couldn’t figure out where she was finding them—until the next day, when a police officer and our neighbor Mrs. Miller arrived. The puppies had been orphaned after their mother, a stray, was found dead. Marsa had been rescuing them one by one.
