Jim Carrey’s sister Rita dies aged 68, one-year after wedding

Rita Carrey, the sister of legendary actor and comedian Jim Carrey, has passed away aged 68 a little over a year since getting married.

Rita’s husband Alex broke the unfortunate news via her Facebook page, stating that his wife had passed away on November 14, “surrounded by her family and friends.”

“It is with heavy heart and my deepest sadness, surrounded by her family and friends Rita passed away peacefully and quietly on November 14, 2024,” he wrote, adding that the couple had spent 16 years together prior to tying the knot in an outdoor wedding last July.

“We traveled the world and met many people who we consider friends. Rita was my bestest friend, my lover, and my beautiful wife,” Alex continued. “Rita always had a loving soul and wanted to help everyone even total strangers. As everyone knows Christmas was Rita’s favorite holiday actually it was every day for her and she started a fundraiser to help a local charity.”

Jim Carrey’s sister

Rita was one of The Mask star Jim Carrey’s three older siblings. The actor has a brother named John and another sister named Patricia. All four of them were born and raised in Canada.

In a 2015 interview with SiriusXM 167, Rita spoke on the subject of being the sister of one of the world’s most popular actors.

“It’s not hard,” she said. “People ask me every day… I said now my name – ’cause they always go ‘Jim Carrey’s sister’ – so my name now is JCS, for Jesus Christ Superstar, because I never get: “Oh, you’re Rita?”

“But I’ve been asked for the last twenty-five years about Jim every day of my life. Every day, every day somebody will inevitably say: “you’re Jim Carrey’s sister”, or, “you look like someone I know”, stuff like that. So it doesn’t bother me.”

At the time of writing, Jim has yet to issue a statement about his sister’s passing.
